Asset Tracking - Status Unknown

When AutoDesk released Max2008 they changed the way Asset Tracking works, and it is quite annoying.

In Max9, when you launched Asset Tracking, the status was listed as found, it said 'Network Path' if it located the textures, or 'Found' if it simply located the texture, even though it was not properly path'd. I think it also said 'Missing' if it could not find the texture.

In Max2008 and subsequently, Max2009, Autodesk changed the way it works. I am not sure if it has to do with AutoDesk Vault, or just a bug in the software. I am guessing AutoDesk wants me to use Vault.

Max9 gave you direct feedback on missing or wrongly path'd assets. Max2009 only lists things as 'Unknown Status.' It is something that has bothered me for a little while now.

Anyway, the first attachment is Max9, the second Max2009.

I think Vault is more or less dead, and I also believe it is an add on that you need to pay for. Disable it, remove it, get rid of it. In fact, I don't even think it is on be default in Max2011, though that may be just how corporate rolled out this release for us.

Your textures should be UNC or DFS pathed to a central server location in your Max file. Avoid using drive letters, they will create problems.

Try reading this post for directions on how to make your asset tracker to give you better feedback. When your file is properly set up every "full path" should read form the server, not locally from the hard drive, and the status of every texture should say OK.

yes, it was after i read this link u just gave me that i edited my post..

but i still dont get it..

is there somewhere i can enable this DFS from?

the way i got it set up is like, my "central server" is the actual main Workstation n then i got 1 slave node connected to it..

can it still work like this?

i tried opening Max on the slave n set up the External Files options like \\master1\textures\ but it didnt seem to accept the path..

maybe the way u'r telling me to set it up REALLY needs another computer as a server other than the Workstation, cuz if i access the ATS from there i see i got local paths with a drive letter on it?

i'd really like to have this Workstation performing these "central server" duties tho :\

oh wow!

nothing more simple LOL

i didnt even have to do anything on the Slave..

just share the folder on the Workstation n thats it! done!

the only issue that remains seems to be about vray proxies..

its like i continue to have that previous textures issue, but this time only happens with proxies..

:(

Edit:

oh wait, proxies DO seem to be working over the network, JUST not these few proxy objects i created myself..

no biggy then, i'll try n look into it..

so, besides that, looks like all is well n working :p

thx a lot

PS:

i dunno wtf's wrong with Asset Tracking..

getting a lot of "unknown status, found" msg's..

many paths r wrong but it still says status found, while other paths r right n it only says unknown status, as well as all the other combinations possible between these 2 previous status..

i know i have recently switched Workstations (n therefore working paths' names) but geez!

anyways, regardless of all this all seems to be working fine so i couldnt care less about Asset Tracking LOL
