Clip Maps?

Is it possible in Max to create "clip maps"? I have read up on creating "bump maps", but what I am looking to do is to take an image of a railing and make it a material, create a clip map that show max where to cut out the negative of the rail and leaving only the positive therefore making the railing look transparent.

Create a black and white image of the railing.

 

Add an 100% transparency map in the materials editor, referencing the black and white image.
