Just running this by a few people but, I recently wanted to understand a bit more about nutrition because sitting at a desk all day and stress is playing badness with my waistline.

So I signed up for a forum on Dietetics and posted a thread about a product which is meant to help provide some of the 5 a day as a supplement.

I would be interested to hear your opinion on how one of their members 'Steve The Daddy' treated me as someone with no experience on the subject;

Looked over a bit of that thread. I think supplements are a great way to make money. No need to prove what you claim...

My wife works at Genentech the amount they have to go through to prove efficacy of their products and the sterility of the environment, equipment, ingredients...

A supplement only needs to make money.

Every forum gets rude/unhelpful/OT people and comments, we do our best to filter but they do get annoying sometimes, don't they?

BTW I think if you're this concerned about nutrition, you should go to a nutritionist. Nutrition is definitely a problem for anybody with an overly stressful or time consuming desk job, and improving your nutrition and exercise is very important to your overall physical and mental health.

posture, posture, posture. VERY important. If you dont think it is, one day it will be too late. Prevent bad back before it happens. Humans are not meant to sit down for long periods of time.

I am lucky, I work just around the corner from a gym and Im self employed. I swim every day and stretch like a cat. Short hamstrings is a current epidemic, also can be blamed on extended sitting. As can obesity, high blood pressure, eye strain, stress, the list is endless.

Move as much as you can. If you can cycle or walk to work do it. Walk to lunch.

My next step is working standing up, maybe even on a treadmill.

Pills/supplements are a scam at worst, minor benefit at best.

And with supplements they are a group of vitamins that are calibrated for a random person. Not you. You may need more vitamin b and less zinc or more calcium or you may be getting a lot of leafy greens but you need more red vegetables.

Tommy I just read a report yesterday how sitting for long periods is bad - no matter how much exercise you get. Sitting just sucks.

Noise - I dont mean to knock on you at all if you want to look into nutrition.

yup I got to agree with the posture part. I've been sitting horribly for my entire career. We have someone in our HR dept who's secondary role is that of fitting everyone with ergonomically sound work environments.

First of all lose the arms on your chair all they do is force your shoulders upwards and create tension. Sit with your legs so your knees are bent at a perfect 90 degree angle. Same goes for the arms 90 degree angle (no support from the chair) and most of the time this also means getting an adjustable pullout keyboard tray mounted to the bottom of your desk. your keyboard should basically feel like its sitting in your lap without touching your lap. Add in a good lumbar support.... vertical is actually better than horizontal.... and of course a good large mouse that fills your hand.

it sounds like a lot .... but get all that under your belt and you will be much happier at the end of a days work. I used to have horrible back tension and stress..... its now gone.

As for supplements.... forget them, if you take anything get yourself a good cheap multi-vitamin at the drug store and get your lazy arse to the gym at least twice a week. My girlfriend has an interview at twitter next week and I was reading through their benefits package.... each employee gets a 100 credit each month towards a gym membership. Now that's a company that's investing in their employees wellness!

I agree, if you are willing to spend, check with a specialist, and do some blood tests. I checked my Cholesterol a couple of years ago it was high, Lebanon has no park and you can't walk on the streets or you'll get run over. Best thing is to get that treadmill. Sadly I have no time for the Gym. :(
