Any idea why this is one of the slowest sites I visit? Even when I am at work - where we have DSL - this site seems to load quite slow, and strangly enough seems to need to reload every graphic image EVERY time I visit here. Why don't the images get stored in my cache (on my harddrive)?

Anywyas, just had to ask, cuz at work with DSL its an annoyance. But when I am at home (dial-up) its painfully slow.

It must be where you are located and the lines that you have to use to get to the site. Do me a favor and from both home and work do a Trace Route to the site when you think it's slow. You can do this by typing "tracert www.cgarchitect.com" from the command line. Copy and paste what you get and I can see if it's the internet between me and you or our server. I am very doubtful that it is the latter as I've surfed the site from all over the US and even in the UK and it seems just as fast as any other site and as fast as it is for me here in my office which is only 3 hours from the server.

Do me a favor and...do a Trace Route to the site
I couldn't resist...

filepush.asp?file=tracert-CGA.jpg

I also couldn't figure how to copy the text off the commandprompt, so I screen captured it.

Not a bad route, to CGA. I did the route to my own site, which should be in the Atlanta area, (Earthlink) and it bounced across the top of the US, down to Pasedina CA and then back to Earthlink, 19 hops total.

Although that first one is the Linksys router.

That's pretty respectable! Damn fast in fact. Here is what I get. Like I said I am 3 hours from the server:

I agree with Hazdaz, this is one of the slower sites I frequent. I don't think pinging the route will reveal the problem. My browser can find the site fast enough, but the site takes awhile to load after it is located. I assumed some of these problems will be fixed when you launch the new site. The bb is particularly slow loading, but I also assumed this would be fixed when you unveiled the new and improved bb system.

These are from the work computer (DSL), so they are fast (compared to when I get home), but still quite slower than just about every other site I visit.

And CRAZY HOMELESS GUY is right in pointing out that its not so much as getting TO the site, its slow having everythign load up (espesially the forums)... its almost as if the computer hesitates for no good reason (it doesn't LOOK like images are loading, yet its not doing anything).

BTW, another site that I have noticed is slow is 3DBuzz.com (which seems to suffer from the same hesitation that this site does).

Wow 24 hops no wonder it's taking so long. And a tracert will show whether a site is slow. Just becuase it finds the site fast does not mean that the data does not needs to keep passing via all of the hops along the way. If there are many hops or delays in beween then the data will take longer to get to your browser.

So is there anything I can do to change that? I assume its all on my ISP's end, right?

This is the first time I have ever heard of that tracert command... but now I am afraid of how many hops its gonna take when I get home to my dial-up connection and try it out there.

I also tried a few other sites just for kicks, and most of them range between 11-16 hops - including that other site I mentioned that I said was fairly slow (that one was only 13, and much lower times).

Hazdaz,

Well what you just told me seems to point to the fact that it's the #of hops and speed (or lack therof) it takes to get to my server. And yes it's all up to the root servers on the internet to decide which route is fastest, although sometimes I wonder. Delay times at each hop are determined by the ammount of traffic that is passing through each router. In theory when a router is overloaded it's supposed to pass it off to another router, but when the problem is within the same organization, (ALTER.NET) for example, there are only so many routers to pass off to.

So bascially you are at the mercy of the net and the traffic that day. Large organizations get around this by having live mirrors located at various locations around the world....however we are not yet a big organization that can afford that . ;)

Many people can have diffrent times from the same city becuase it all depends who your ISP is and what route they us to connect to the web. If the route your dial up uses is the same or similar, you will have three strieks against you. Connection speed, router delay and hops.

BTW I've surfed by dial up to my site from the other side of Canada (about 8 hours flying) and it was reasonably fast.

I'm all the way in Hawaii and I've never had a speed issue with the CGA site or the BB. I cant do a tracert at work (firewall) but I'll try one at home. Im using cable.

Steve: Perhaps it's time to look into a cable ISP. I personally dont like DSL.

KAINOA - Well we JUST got DSL here at work and even if its a little slow with this site, its still a zillion times better than the dial-up we had before that

... oh how fun, having to email 5 MB drawings over a 56K connection... fun fun

JEFF - Naa, the American Internet lines are probably up-to-date... unlike the American POWER lines that caused that massive black-out the week before.

Also having been up to Calgary and partied with you crazy Canadians (we actually used to work for the same company), I'd put all the blame on some drunk Canuck. :D

I KNEW that name was familiar. Now it all makes sense. Small world. Just this morning I found out that a large Pocket PC site I visit is run by a guy a few blocks from me. Go figure.

Yeah Canadians are crazy partiers, but SMEDheads are even more so. Well in the good old days anyway.

Ever chat to Brian Neal over at aces? He runs the web site aceshardware.com from a very modest little sun box, using all kinds of clever tricks to compress the web site content to make it travel faster. He is always welcome to chip in with a few pointers anyhow. Some good articles at ace on how they did the web site.
