Jonathan Sanchez
Hi Maria.... I would create the egg shaped outline, then I'd pull back using soft selection some of the center vertices. Chamfer the edges that you want to be sharper.... add turbosmooth and refine.
djoshi
Use lathe + convert to mesh + play with mesh + Smooth...
Fran
Start with a Plane with 4x4 segments. Convert to editable poly. Move each of the corner vertices to an adjacent vertice and weld. Pick the center vertice and move downward with soft selection enabled: Scale vertices to create the basic shape: Add an extra loop to manipulate the shape of the rim: Move the loop up until the rim looks good. Toggle NURMS smoothing on or off to see the results. Once you have the form correct, add a shell modifier. With NURMS smoothing OFF, convert the stack to editable poly. When you enable NURMS again, you should get a pretty good edge. If you have Max 2010 or 2011, I highly recommend using the Graphite Tools.
-MerlyN-
I'd either take a similar road to frans or use a lathed spline and an ffd modifier. Though Fran's approach will probably be a lot more polyefficient. Apropro... Fran, why would you recommend Graphite for this?
Fran
Hi Nils, I recommend using the Graphite Tools for all editable poly modeling. There are tools in there that are not in the Editable Poly rollout.
