Fryrender, 3ds Max 2009, and Displacement Maps are not working for me.

Hello,

I'm trying to use a displacement map on a scene made in 3ds Max and rendered in Fryrender. In the Fryrender material editor, the preview shows the displacement map working just fine. However, when I use the material in my 3ds Max scene the displacement map does not work. I've tried increasing the displacement height to huge numbers and there's still no displacement. I've even tried scaling the model up and down, but still nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for looking!

Obviously check that the 'Displacement' box in Fry's material editor is checked.

Have you applied a UVW map to the geometry?

If you copy the displacement map into the bitmap slot next to Ref 0, you'll be able to see it in the viewport, (provided 'Show Standard Map in Viewport' is selected in the Max material editor). This should help you to assertain how the displacement will be mapped.

Thanks for the response =). I do have all the displacement settings correct from the Fry end. In fact when I do the preview render in the material editor, it renders the material in the test scene perfect. It's when I use the material on my scene in 3ds Max. My mapping looks good, and just to be sure I changed the Fryrender displacement map unit size to Meter (as opposed to millimeter) and it's still completely flat. It renders all the other bitmap textures fine just fine.

If you are adamant that the material is correct and that you have mapped it correctly, then I suggest you focus on the geometry and the 3D scene. Have you tested your displacement material on any other object in the scene? Or a different scene altogether? If so, what were the results? Are your Max units setup correctly? Sub-Object ID's correct?

Usually these kind of problems can be resolved if you take them out of context, (ie, isolate the material and/or the geometry into a new scene). Send me the Fry material if you don't get anywhere and I'll have a look
