Rendering a separate VrayEnvironmentFog pass?

I'm not shure how the chunky ground would impossibilitate the use of Z-depth. But you must know better than me what's going on... Have you tried setting up the vray environment fog in Environment and Effects and include only the light(s) that should affect it? Than set the VrayAtmosphere in render elements... But I usually render it separately. In other words, I disable GI and all the "other" lights and override materials with a black material. This produces a black render with only the fog visible. Then just composite everything... makes sense? This way you won't have render times increased, risk messing up a good render and have better control over the whole thing.
