stayinwonderland
The only way I can get max to close now (since a few weeks ago) is to not just end task, but end process. Every time I click on certain things inside max such as double click on a material to open it in a pop-out window or open the list panel, it says not responding for a few seconds (not sure if this is normal) before continuing as normal. Sometimes it's using 3% CPU and nearly every ounce of my 8GB of ram. 3ds max 2012 64, windows 7.

stayinwonderland
Wow, it's rare that such a stubborn problem is resolved so easily and so thoroughly. Bammo - gone. Thanks a bunch!
