davidmurphy1
I am trying to displace my floor tiles grout. Should i be using a displace within my material or should i be using Vray displacement modifier to the mesh? I am having the same issue with both. When i apply the standard tiles map it doesn't displace properly. Could this be because i imported form revit? Can you please help
Scott Schroeder
To properly displace your mesh needs to have information to pull from. Revit objects generally are awful for this. Vray displacement has a little better controls, so I tend to use that rather than material displacement. If you want clean displacement, simply re-create the floor inside Max in either poly modeling or with a spline and the populate terrain (http://populate3d.com/products/terrain/) script to give yourself a nice quad mesh. Either way, you want to have a good quaded mesh to displace from.
davidmurphy1
Thanks for the help, will i be able to displace the standard tiles map? or do i need to create a bitmap myself?
Francisco Penaloza
standard tile should work just fine even with some small variation, now if you need more random result you may need to look in a external plugin.
davidmurphy1
Does anyone have an example of how this is done? or a link to a tutorial?
notamondayfan
Using just a tile map in the displacement modifier will look very flat. If this is the effect you are after you'd be better off modelling the tiles. Look at http://www.cg-source.com/floorgenerator.php for an easy way to automate this. Displacement will take much longer to render than a modeled floor, but if you plan to create some nice displacement maps, then use displacement.
