hmm, geosphere also doesnt give those curved lines.........

tesselate polys on a sphere, then scale the center vertices. yields similar effect

here is what i made. then used compound object - conform with setting "toward wrap-to center"

 

 

the sphere to wrap to would be radius to match your object. i used a 6" radius sphere, figured its a small vase

create sphere, convert to editable poly, select polys.

 

graphite modeling tools, polygon modeling pulldown - generate topology, click on edge direction (also looks like diamond pattern)
