Max post production render in Photohop exercise not making sense

Hi,

I'm doing some post production exercises from a book I'm reading and having issues in photoshop.

The read instructs me to open several files in photo shop including the final Max render image, which is 3000 x 3000 pixels, and 4 other images generated in the render for ambient occlusion, depth of field, reflectivity, etc., all of which are 400 x400 px.

The instructions are to copy the background layers from these 400x400 images into the main render in different blending modes but, obviously, these layers are much smaller than the main render so they show up in the middle of the image at a reduced size??

Can anyone tell me what I might be missing.

The illustrations in the book show the images being different sized. So how can this be done?

they should not be different sizes.
