Tim in Hollywood
Hi all, Planning to work with a client in the next couple weeks. We'll be working on the same files (not at the same time) on a collaborative basis, so we want a more efficient way to transfer everything back/forth than FTP or e-mailed attachments. Is it possible to run the .max file directly from the Dropbox folder? Will this cause anything problems with speed when working with the file. FYI: The 3ds max files should be under 5MB. Any advice or info you can offer for this will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
alexanderbong
No problem at all. It is what I am currently using to sync work files between artists.
Corey Beaulieu
Um... You can just download the Dropbox "App" to your workstation and then every time you save your file, Dropbox will syn it back to the cloud. This way the file is always local and there is nothing to worry about. 5MB though is almost nothing. You could just attach that in an email and not risk the overlap. I wouldn't suggest this though. The risk in overwriting each other seems too great. You should come up with something better so there is no risk at all.
Zdravko Barisic
Saving with counter at the end of file name? xxxxx_ME_01 xxxxx_CLIENT_02 xxxxx_ME_03 xxxxx_CLIENT_04 .... ...... ...
cgrant3d
Use a file history script to keep a history of your Max files. That way if there's a mistake / corruption in the file you can step back to the previous version. Martin Breidt's Incremental Save is a great script for that. It allows you to have YourFileName.max as your working file and all your saves get incremented to 01, 02, 03. But you don't have to worry about what the "current" file is - your current file is always YourFileName.max (no numbers). That means XREF's will work and everything. IMHO the way Max handles incrementing filenames by default is flawed because any other file referencing your file will break. http://scripts.breidt.net/#incrSave
Scott Schroeder
You could always look into using containers. I've never used them, but the pitch on them is that they are great for collaborating on projects.

Either this or XRefs. Pick different areas to work on and have them sync to a master file.
