tituszronai
Hello to all. I'm new to 3ds Max (v2014) and Mental Ray, but I'm familiar with render engines. I have been using Cinema 4D for years, and Artlantis Studio even longer. Now, my problem is with Mr Sky Portal which is showing black on render, but it's visibility isn't enabled and it transparency is set to 100% white. Every window relevant to the view has a sky portal. A few are transparent and a few not. I don't understand. Here is the image in question: I deleted a few sky portals, and now you can see a portal showing still black if looked at it through 2 windows, but it is invisible if only one window is between (up in the middle): Has anyone seen anything like this? (The brightness difference is due to lowered ev value in the second picture.) Edited May 16, 2014 by tituszronai
Francisco Penaloza
are you suing any shader in your portal light?? where are they located inside of the room or outside? They should be outside, not in the glass. Glass also will diminish the intensity of your portal light, so if reflections are not showing you can hide your glass. I'm not using any shaders on the portals, they are on default setting like they are when you create one, I have not changed anything. The portals are ouside the window and their light directions are pointing inward. For the glass I used a preset arch&design glass material. Thx for the reply. I will try deleting the windows first thing in the morning tomorrow.
tituszronai
Well, I think I have found the source of the bug/glitch. And it is a bug. You can not see through two sky portals, because the second one will be shown black. This is kinda annoying. I dont know if it is just 3ds Max Design 2014 related, or that other versions are also suffering from this.

Couldn't recreate. http://i.imgur.com/WLm7OYU.jpg Can you share your scene (remove everything except objects, windows geometry, and lights)? Francisco Penaloza
Yep I did a test at my office and everything works fine. Maybe is your glass? The glass mesh is a solid or a single plane? The Arch&design preset also have for single and double side mesh, please check that it does make a difference.

Thanks guys, I will look into this, but just not right now, because I have a project headline for one of my subject on the university on Friday, so I dont have time for it right now. I will come back to this forum as soon as I can.
