Dimitris Tolios
You ram is not ECC, it is regular unregistered "UDIMM" DDR4. Heatspreaders are just for looks. In general, if you see heatspreaders, colors, decals and other "pretty stuff" it is for consumers, not for server use
Gary Ledgerwood
So this wont work? Would you mind sending me a link to what I should order that will be compatible? Thanks in advance.

What part indicates ECC/ Non ECC? Also, it the Noctua D14 any smaller than the D15. Should I return the D15 so I dont run into space limitations? Thanks! Dimitris Tolios
Crucial ballistic(x) DDR4 should work with the s2011-3 i7s just fine.
Gary Ledgerwood
So this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148865&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= And what about the Noctua? Should I stick with the D15?
Gary Ledgerwood
I ended up going with this for the RAM... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148861&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= Still would love feedback on the space constrictions and whether the D14 would be better. numerobis
Yes the RAM should be ok. I think the D14 should fit better within this case. If you compare the total height, the D14 is 5mm smaller than the D15 (160mm vs 165mm) and it comes only with a 120mm fan which is a big difference if look at the images and it should fit above the RAM. (But no guaranty!) http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=41&lng=en&set=1 http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=68&lng=en&set=1 But why are you limiting yourself with this small case? Gary Ledgerwood
But why are you limiting yourself with this small case? Because I am an idiot! I am totally rushing into the build as my wife and I are expecting out second baby in the next couple of weeks. I plan to work from home for a bit and I wanted a machine that was similar to what I use at work. I had never used pc part picked before and I just assumed it knew if things would fit. I would take any recommendation on an alternate case. Sounds like I will have a few things to send back anyway.
numerobis
I think to suggest a case is not easy, because design is more a personal thing. I use Lian Li for my workstations and Cooler Master for my nodes in the basement - because they are cheap and have a good air flow and i don't see them, so there is no need for a nice aluminium case. I think generally today its much easier to find a good case compared to some years ago. Today almost every case features at least 120mm fans and many of them 140mm or more. And the overall build quality has been improved. I would just look for something that is more than 200mm wide and has a good air flow (and USB3). Maybe look for some reviews if you find a case that you like. This price comparison is for UK but gives you a good overview and filters http://skinflint.co.uk/?cat=gehatx&v=e&sort=p&xf=533_ohne+Netzteil~534_ATX~2516_20&pg=
Dimitris Tolios
Do you have a budget for the case? Choices are many, but that's always the 1st thing to ask.
Gary Ledgerwood
So I am all built and up and running. It wasn't that bad at all. I did buy a full size case just to be sure space wasn't an issue. My biggest problem was attaching the tower USB lead to the motherboard. There was a funny hump in the case that made it nearly impossible. I had to take the motherboard back out to do it. I have had one lock up/ crash so far. Not sure it was due to something being hooked up incorrectly or a overclocking issue. I have never set up overclocking before so I just left it up to the OC genius. Let me know if I should be doing something differently. Also, the Noctua NH-D15 came with an additional fan that I did not hook up. Not sure if I needed to or not. Thanks to all for the help and advice. I am glad I decided to do it myself. Happy Holidays!
Dimitris Tolios
Hey there, hope you are happy with your purchase. The Noctua is meant to work with 2x fans. You won't get full performance if you run it with only one.
Gary Ledgerwood
I need help, quick and badly! Please!! So everything was running pretty much fine but I wanted to get back in and install the second fan and I also realized that I installed the ram in slots 5678 instead of 1234. I had to remove the Noctua to get to the fan and be able to get to the back clip to remove the video card. I put everything back together and now when I power it up, it doesn't seem to recognize the video card. I can't tell if it is that or a boot problem. Everything powers on fine. The fans are running. The video card fans just run for a few seconds and stop. I tried another video card to see if I messed something up and I get the same result. Everything sounds like it is up and running properly but I can't see anything on my monitors. I have tried re seating the card in every slot. Any thoughts? Could it have anything to do with moving the ram?
Gary Ledgerwood
Ok so I got everything up and running again. I consulted my motherboard manual and it said I should have my ram installed in slots 1,3,5,7. I did that but now it only recognizes 16 of my 32GB of ram. Any thoughts? Thanks! numerobis
I don't know what you mean with slot 1-8, but for quad channel with four modules they should be placed in DIMM A1, B1, C1, D1 The sequence from left to right is A1-A2-B1-B2__CPU__D2-D1-C2-C1 The grey slots if we are talking about the Asus X99 Deluxe. If that does not work you should do a CMOS reset and maybe check if you are running the latest BIOS (maybe do this first, because if you have to upgrade, you have to do a CMOS reset too) Edited December 27, 2014 by numerobis
Gary Ledgerwood
So I did a CMOS reset and updated the BIOS but the board is still not recognizing the memory in DIMM slots 1 & 3... There is a board explorer function and it only shows DIMM slots 7 & 5 highlighted.
numerobis
So 1-3-5-7 is A1-B1-C1-D1, right? Did you make a CMOS clear after the update? Have you set the RAM settings to XMP? What is you RAM? The Crucial 2133? http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/memory/ct4k8g4dfd8213#productDetails Did you try to reseat them? I would test them one by one (slot D1) If this works for all of them, try B1+D1. Then you could try manual settings for the main timings and the vdimm (2133 15-15-15-36 2N 1.20V) Edited December 27, 2014 by numerobis
Gary Ledgerwood
Thanks so much for helping me troubleshoot this. This is the memory I purchased... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148861 I did make a CMOS clear after the update. I dont know about setting the RAM settings to XMP? Is that option in the BIOS? I did try reseating them all with no luck. If I install all 4 sticks in DIMM slots 8-5, everything boots fine and it recognizes all 32GB. But I assume this is then running in dual channel mode... That is where I am at right now and everything is running great. Is it a problem to leave it this way? numerobis
So we are talking about an MSI board? (model?) If you install them all on one side, i'm not sure if they are even running in dual channel mode. For dual channel it says B1+D1. If it really does not work as it should, it could also be a problem with the board or the CPU. And then you should replace them. But then all modules should work at least if they are recognized in the right slots. It seems that they don't support XMP (Extreme Memory Profile). http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/ram/76257-crucial-32gb-ddr4-2133-memory/ Can you post your RAM settings? Gary Ledgerwood
Yes, MSI X99s SLI PLUS. Processor: Intel Core i7-5820K. This thing seems to be flying through everything I throw at it. 3ds Max, Sketchup, Photoshop, etc...
Gary Ledgerwood
So am I wrong to assume that from the CPU-z results that I am in quad channel mode and that things are running properly? I also ran IntelBurnTest and it recognized all of the RAM. It completed perfectly with the very high stress level checked.
numerobis
no you are not in quad channel mode. Look at page 30 of your manual. Try dual channel with slot 1 and 5 to see if the left slots work at all. You can try to set the timings and voltage manually. Gary Ledgerwood
Page 30 references the Multi Bios switch. Is that what you wanted me to see? How come CPU-z says Channel # Quad? Is that just what the motherboard supports?
numerobis
page 30: http://www.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-SLI-PLUS.html#down-manual you can try to start with one stick and the add them one by one after every reboot ( 1 / 1+5 / 1+5+3 / 1+5+3+7 ) How come CPU-z says Channel # Quad? Is that just what the motherboard supports? i don't know. But i don't think it is possible to get quad channel with this arrangement. Gary Ledgerwood
Gotcha. Sorry I was looking at the hard manual. ) I did start with one stick in 1 and it wouldn't boot... I will try it again.
