import Revit files by Material?

What determines what gets assigned generic materials in Revit?

When I import my .rvt model into max, (by material), there are 20 or so items that highlight when I select one beam. And they are listed as "Generic" and include door jambs, metal railings, and various other items.

But when I assign different materials to them to try to separate them,(in Revit), they still all select together in max after I re-import?

I've tried assigning different materials in the Revit properties palette and by painting objects with new materials. But I still can't select them individually in 3ds max. Even using an edit poly modifier, When I select elements and apply materials in max, they get applied to all of the "generic" unselected polygons.
