Render Advice

The rendering story is inconsistent.

The room says adult; the Les Paul (Honey Burst with cream P-90s would look better) says teenager and the balls under the bed say young kid.

Bed seems small for the comforter and pillow sizes.

I think you can find a better lamp, especially being in the foreground.

James, overall great image! I agree with comments above, but I'll be more specific about the lighting. In order to avoid the major contrast between the light and dark areas, first soften your HDRi or light source. You can either push the number up in your inverse gamma, or adjust it in photoshop. One easy solution is to use an overcast HDRI, you get way less directional light, and way more "fill". The second suggestion would be to add some windows or serious artificial light behind the camera. Right now it seems like you've got some pretty strong sunlight coming from the windows, and that is the only light source. This rarely makes for a good composition. The other thing I would suggest is adding plenty of reflection into all of your materials. You can of course control the reflection glossiness of each material, but your walls for instance should have quite a bit of reflection to bounce the light into the space. Let me know if you have any questions. This is just what I see off the cuff.

Thanks Chris. That's a lot of very useful information, I'll definitely put that into use. I'm still learning about lighting and hope to get better at it with time. I'll be sure to contact you in case I have any questions. Thanks again.

I managed to change a lot thanks to you and everyone else's help. I rendered the image again but with two extra fill lights this time that I placed behind the camera. I also cleaned up most of the noise and finally took it into photoshop for post production. What do you think?

I'm really impressed you noticed that. The guitar colours were really washed out before so I adjusted its levels in Photoshop to try and make it blend better with the scene. I will definitely reduce its saturation now. Thanks for the help George.

I think it's the colors - they might be impossible to blend in.

You have these soft grays and then all of a sudden you have orange and black - the colors of Halloween. That's why I suggested

a soft brown or blond color.

I noticed that because I play guitar and have 14 electric guitars including 2 Les Pauls.

Overall, it looks good. Just some things that look out of place. Like the other comment says, some things just don't add up. Going off of the dresser, the room has a nautical feel with the boat, but the guitar is the complete opposite and the nightstand looks like it belongs in a fancy hotel rather than a very simple bedroom. The bed is seriously awesome, you have nailed the materials and modeling. To me, something looks off with the bump/displacement on the rug where the sunlight hits it, though that might just be artifacts from uploading it. The items under the bed are a nice touch, but they would look better in a kids bedroom as opposed to a very mature looking one like this. As for the lamp, I'd go with something simple, like the rest of the room.

As I said, overall it is very good. The lighting is nice, the room has a great feel to it, but some things don't belong. There looks to be a bit of noise in your render too, in the shadows on the bed and on the dresser at the back it is most noticeable.

One more thing I noticed is that there is no base board. You would probable have like a 6 or 8" plain base board with a routed top - then some plain area above that THEN your moulding enclosed panel would begin.

The only place you notice this is at wall bottom on the left side of the guitar. You can cover it or do something so that that joint stands out less.
