Devin Johnston
In a standard Max light under the light parameters there will be a box that says "show cone" this will show you its cone of light.
evanmister
im from houston. thanks for your help, but it does not appear to work. when i check show cone, i cannot see the light source? im pretty sure that determines whether or not the cone is shown if the light is currently selected or not. thanks again. any other bright ideas? John Dollus
You need to create a piece of geometry and give it a bit of self-illumination to create a light 'source'. Is that what you mean?
Devin Johnston
Not sure what your problem is, have you hidden the lights? Maybe you should post a screen shot of what you are looking at.

Is that what you mean? maybe that is what i need. what i mean is light is emitted from a source, most often a bulb which is visible, but in max i dont know how to make that source visible. i want to be able to see the source, probably even fake a bulb. pixelperfectg
If your using mental ray (and a mental ray light), you can just click "show Icon in renderer" and it will make the light emitter itself visible.
