Render Elements Crash

I've got a problem with render elements in MAX5.1

 

I set up a scene, set up the render elements that I wanted, rendered the image and everything went fine. Now when I go back to the scene(i'm playing, testing out new techniques) to add another render element MAX crashes as soon as I hit the "add" [render element] button in the render dialog. I re-booted, same problem, completely new scene--same problem. Why am I crashing??
