Mimicking a christmas led light, how would you start ?

Hi everybody,

Breaking my head on trying to mimic one of those christmas led's. Did test's like different materials / ior / ies lights....but just don't seem to get it ? Starting to feel like a floating cork on open water, please someone.... give me some guidance to the coast !!

What i did :

1. Finding out the real world setup of how a led is made.

2. Putting the IES light on different levels in my led ( to see the effect on various angles )

3. Making a reflection cap around my IES light and inside the led. Result was minimal, so left that out.

4. Making a second refraction layer to my epoxy material ( ior 1.438 + ior 1.627 ) Trying to make a sort of lens effect. This made some effect as expected. So left that in.

What am i missing, doing wrong ? How would you make it ?

A. An IES file is considered far-field photometry. It takes into account the entire fixture and mounting conditions so placing it inside a fixture without excluding elements will give you incorrect results.

B. What you are attempting to do is called near-field photometry and is something VRAY does not do at all.

C. replace your IES source with a simple point source or mesh light, add in Vray Glare effects (or manipulate in post) and call it a day.

The extent of your research and detail is pretty close to actual rocket science but this isn't rocket science.

@John,

Followed your input and the first test results are pretty oke. Love it when things make life easier.

As you can see i tried out the units variation and different placing of the light source ( sphere ) to see the effect. Also believe that the intensity multiplier effects how good you can see the bloom and glare effect, guess that is situation depended.

Did tryout an extruded square and circle but doesn't make it compared to the sphere. Still wondering what you mean with a " simple point source ".

Cheers,

Ah, great. Point source=sphere. You interpreted correctly :)
