I really need someones guidance, I have created my very first 3D visualization on 3ds Max and Vray, and I cannot for the life of me make it look realistic like you guys. I joined Plural sight, and watched countless tutorials on realism, and I am absolutely stuck. I think the problem lies in my render settings. Please help a newbie...

Ronnie,

This mere question it been answered much time here, please do a search on the forum and you'll find many great answers.

But as a resume of most of them.

Realism is not everything, and pleasant and informative image should be your main goal.

Also, this quality won't happen overnight, it takes time and lots of practice to get to high-end levels. is not about settings, or shaders, it is about everything.

Also, you should use real word photography as a guide or reference and not another rendering, using real-world imagery will tell you where you are failing in your CG and what you should put more work on it.

Just keep practicing.

Cheers.

Stop for a moment, step away from the tutorials and your computer. LOOK at things. TOUCH things. Think about what makes a concrete material ... concrete. How do the reflections look - everything has reflection btw? How bumpy is the surface? Do this for wood, tile, walls, brick, plastic. How does light interact with that material? Is it transparent like skin? Does the light get soaked up and lost in the material or bounce back blinding you?

DETAIL. Everything has imperfections. No wall is straight. No floor is perfectly flat. etc etc.

You have to be able to see what makes things realistic while creating your scenes. And this, it won't happen over night ... and there are NO magical settings to make things look realistic.

Keep on looking at the world ....

It's your first visualization so no, it won't end up looking like the images in the gallery even if you have the best tutorials.

As mentioned above, to start with you need a good reference image that shows a similar setting and mood.

Materials also play an important role in achieving realism.

Even if we list every single requirement for realism, your next image will still not look great. Somethings simply require repetition and experience.
