xEndlessxUrbiax
I am using Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2012 64-bit and am trying to consolidate the materials in my scene for use on another computer. I am using the "Resource Collector" and also tried the "Bitmap/Photometric Paths" Utilities but every time I run the utility I get an error that says "An error has occurred and the application will now close." Can anyone point me in some kind of direction to fix this? Thanks
datacrasher
is this an unhandling error? do you get an WER file crash? if so sounds like a blue screen of death i would delete the WER file in the temp files. Try adding a service pack if you have not done so If this does not help then delete the max.ini file as a last resort
Corey Beaulieu
My experience has been that this happens from time to time when using the photometric/bitmap editor. It happened in 2011 as well, and to be perfectly honest, it happens more often than not. Almost like the larger the scene the more likely it is to happen. Try just saving as an archive. This will zip all maps, proxies, lights, and any other links, as well as a copy of the file into a single folder. You can then open it on another machine and if necessary, reset the paths through the asset tracker (shift+t). A quick word of warning... archiving can take several minutes to save so don't worry if it looks like max stalled. Just wait it out a little. I believe a progress bar even shows up in the bottom left by the listener.
xEndlessxUrbiax
Thank you, I tried updated my service packs which didn't help this problem but was probably good I double checked anyway. I used the archive feature which seems very useful except I can't figure out how to "reset" the path to the folder it created. I see I can make the paths to the bitmaps relative to the archived folder but the materials that are there seem to be only copies, and the paths still lead to the original location (before archiving). I do not see an option to remap the paths to a single location (without using resource collector which still crashes).
Corey Beaulieu
Hit shift+t. This will open your asset tracker. you can then select one or all of the missing maps, right click, and go to set path. When you do this, just select whatever the maps folder is and max should find the files. This is just an alternative to the photometric/bitmaps utility except that you have to manual copy files around. Make sure to hit the refresh icon before and after though. datacrasher
try removing the path and adding it in the in the custom and the configer user path and then click on the external file. If you still the same problem then i would contact you're autodesk support team Good luck
xEndlessxUrbiax
Yeah the problem with that is you have to do it one file at a time, which isn't too bad for my current scene. Thanks for the help guys. Still wondering how to fix the error on Resource Manager. Archiving is a good alternative though.
Corey Beaulieu
You would only need to relink them one at a time if they are in multiple different folders. Otherwise you can select multiple paths and relink them all at once to the same folder.
