i know sketchup can use tape measurement tool(basically its a ruler) for setting guides. i wonder how can i get very accurate in 3ds max, any tools that can help me set measurement guides and help me create accurate models? i know sketchup is very good and very easy at setting guides and measurements ? sorry i am a newbie.

ps. i am in custom made furniture business. to create size accurate furnitures is very important. thats why i really wanted to find out how can i create size accurate model easily and accurately.

use the numerical input in transform roll outs - most tools have numerical input anyway?

its really the same as sketchup and is as 'accurate' as any other software despite what some under eductated graduate architect with a copy of rhino will tell you.

There are several ways to get you dimensions accurate.

You can use AutoCAD and draw the top/front/left view, import to Max and then you have guidelines. (put every view in different layers in AutoCAD, it will be easier to use them in Max)

Turn on grid snap. You wont be able to move the mouse freely... Well, actually yes, but it will move 10cm at a time. You set it so it will jump just 1cm for example or 2cm and when you create something it will be always an even number. I dont like this method though, but try it and you will see if it's good for you.

You can create a box (or whatever) and type in the dimensions you need and move to it's place. I recommend this last method because it's fast and accurate too.

Using AutoCAD is a good way too, but if you create a simple furniture, it's just a waste of time, if you need to create a complex piece, maybe AutoCAD can help (it's really expensive though if don't already own a copy).

Hi!

You can use lines (also shapes like rectangle) as guides (which you move and rotate by numerical input) and than use snap to create your object.

Objects and shapes like box, cylinder, rectangle etc have numeric values (real world units) for controlling parameters.

This is how I model the furniture I design, and it is very accurate.

good luck!
