Randy liddil
Hello everyone, hope all is well! So here is my problem... I'm save an "OpenExr" from within the Vray Frame Buffer (Vray raw image file) so that all of my Vray render elements like Ambient Occlusion, Specular, etc save right into the OpenExr file. I'm using the "ProExr" plugin for Photoshop (http://www.fnordware.com/ProEXR/) and everything comes in perfect into the layers in one file so I don't have to render separate passes. I can even bring the exr files into after effects, etc. BUT, for some reason the OpenExr always comes into Photoshop with a Transparent background right away rather than the color background I have in 3ds Max. Why is this?

Zdravko Barisic
Download link is dead, as topic also, so it could be nice if someone could reupload OpenEXR again. Thanks!

Francisco Penaloza
When you are opening your image in Pophotoshop when click on open button, also hold down the key Alt, this will bring a dialog screen asking you what to do with the alpha, load it as separate layer or transparency. There is also a little check box there that will pop that windows every time that you load an exr. so no need to use the key Alt.
Randy liddil
None of this works with Adobe Photoshop CS6 64bit. Not even the answer from Mr. Kitts. I have the ProEXR plugin and that doesn't work either. Neither is there a checkbox that pops up when opening the .exr file.
Tommy L
None of this works with Adobe Photoshop CS6 64bit. Not even the answer from Mr. Kitts. I have the ProEXR plugin and that doesn't work either. Neither is there a checkbox that pops up when opening the .exr file. Its a quirk peculiar to the .exr format. There's not too much you can do about it as .exr was written to behave in this way this by ILM. When it was released as an open format they did the world a favor. ILM dont want to go back and change a format that works for them just because it doesnt operate correctly for a PS Workflow. A google search should bring up an epic rant/discussion on the Adobe forums. You can probably find a solution by reading that thread.... Francisco Penaloza
There must be something wrong over there, here it always works I save the passes and the final render with the V Ray frame buffer (VRay raw image) Then when load that image in Photoshop click the button open with the Alt key pressed it should show this dialog and select "Alpha appears on separate layers"

Randy liddil
I finally got it to work with selecting the option ket and the proexr menu comes up but now my Ambient Occlusion pass comes in with a flat back background and not white.

Randy liddil
i understand this but its so odd that i just can't render the dirt map in the render elements as vray extra tex within the .openexr file and come in with a white background into photoshop. every time i choose "alpha appears on separate layers" in the ProExr to keep my background non-transparent then the ambient occlusion that rendered out in the render elements comes in with a black background. But when i pick "alpha makes layers transparent" then i lose my background but the ambient occlusion comes in fine.
