vRay Sun exposure problem

Hi all, I'm starting to learn vRay but keep coming across the same issue when lighting with the vRay Sun.

I have attached images of the over exposed area around the window frames which have a white colour applied.

I have tried to lower the suns intensity and increase brightness in physical camera to compensate... but always come to the same results. The only way I've found a way around this is to apply a grey colour to the window frame... which the sun then exposes as white... but this is a cheats way and doesn't actually solve my issue.

Working in Maya

Settings are >

Color Mapping: Exponential

Linear Workflow

Phy Cam >

F-number: 5.6

Shutter: 100

ISO: 800

vRay Sun settings are default.

Any pointers on what it is I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for looking :)

This is the natural effect of the different lighting intensities between outside and inside. One way to go around would be to increase your interior lighting. But in reality if you take a photo you'll get the same effect.

Other way to manage this is using color mapping. You mentioned that you are using exponential, did you adjust the bright multiplier??

you mentioned that you are using Lineal workflow, if you want to stay true to that workflow, you should not use any color mapping and adjust that in post as need it. Remember to save your images a float format, HDR or EXR.

Now it is OK to mix and match any ways, so using Exponential or Reinhard (recommended) is OK too. the only thing is to understand you'll lose some lighting information. You could also use a combo of color mapping but set it up to color mapping only. this way you still have some flexibility in your output image.

Thanks for the reply Francisco!

I had a play with the settings you suggested and the best outcome I get is when switching to 'Reinhard', setting Burn Value to 0.1 and setting to 'Color Mapping - No Gamma'.

I think there's obviously a lack of knowledge on my part with regards to gamma correcting and color mapping...

Will have to explore further.

Many thanks,

Kel
