I think its important in poly modelling

Hi everyone. I m an architect.. and long time ago i was use to do the modeling in autoCAD, but as max is very powerful and user friendly i stick to the poly modeling. But from a long time i am looking for a simple thing which I don't know (is it really there in max? or its me who is unaware of it?) so please help me as I think this must be useful to a lots of people.

now the question..

 

we know that when we "shift+move" any edge from any poly surface-- we got... i mean u know what happens. Now can we stretch that edge by this method till a particular distance?? I mean if we want an edge at exact 6" away.. how can we input the value of that 6".

 

cause its very important to we architects to do those kind of things with distances. so pleas help me if there any way for this. If any questions about my question ... ;-) please shoot.

As Bev.lynn mentions moving an edge by right clicking the move Icon and inputting the value will work.

If it's a shift move (extrusion) your after just go to the extrude on the right under edit edges, click settings and input the distance there.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but after you select the edge you want to move have you tried right-clicking the select and move icon then just type in the value?

 

 

Thanks for ur advice but i m not talking about just to move the edge to a particular distance..... that u can do by right clicking the move icon or by pressing F12,

 

I was asking .... when we select an edge (of poly surface) and then we shift+move (or any transform), its creates another edge which is connected to the last edge with the faces. Now the question is this that if we want to copy that edge to a particular distance...... how can we do that???

Actually, you are not copying the edge: you're extruding it. Therefore, you can simply use the extrude command, adding the amount you want.

 

 

hey Rick, thank you. yeah u r right... about extruding the edge. and thanks I never looked it that way.

but it always extrude the edge at 90' of the previous face. can we do it in the same direction? I mean just extruding the edge along the previous faces. (like if we make a plane of 2 length segments and then convert it in to poly.):rolleyes:

Method 1

If you lock the selection then use the shift move methode BUT have snap on and snap between two verticies that you know are the correct distance and direction.

 

or

 

Method 2

 

Shift move the edge, after the extrusion, move the edge back to where you started and then use the transform type in to move the edge to the desired distance, if you want to create more extrusions to the same length continue with Method 1

hi prashanth

 

i think there is a one way out.

 

first convert your object to editable mesh now

 

just select your edge

 

lock the selection

 

when move is activated jus press shif and click anyhwhere

in your viewport, it will create a copy of your edge at the same place,

 

your new edge is selected now and you can move it this new edge using f12

 

finally change your object to editable poly (if you want it in poly)

Thanks Umesh, the mesh method is good. Thanks for that... its new for me. but I think when I work on a complicated geometry with the precision, it will vary time consuming.

 

But I think from the help of all of you, its much easier for me to do the things correctly. Thanks to all.
