maxwellbrown
Hi guys - I am working on an an accelerated animation (~6 seconds) showing the Statue of Liberty going from shiny copper to green worn copper and I am having a hard time determining how best to transition between the two materials. I have tried using both Composite and Blend materials, but going from a highly reflective material to a matte material just doesn't look "right". You can see what I have currently here: (make sure to watch in 1080p Any suggestions on how I could transition between these two materials and create a convincing, "realistic" affect would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Much, Max

Krisztian Gulyas
I think there should be no (or minimum) reflection when the material changes. First make it matte, than change the material to green copper and some dirt maps would look good if showed up as it becomes green. Nic H
needs better lighting and a background - at the moment it looks like a straight fade between 2 materials. you could try animating a vray dirt map to erode (from peaks to troughs) the shiny material into the worn copper, perhaps with a nested noise map to give it a rougher edge. this could then be put into a gradient ramp and animated top to bottom so there is some directional movement to the blend its nearly there though as the 2 individual materials look good
cg_Butler
I agree that it needs some variation when it changes. The likelyhood is that the grooves and dips would change first because of water and dirt accumulating in those places more frequently. I think your materials are good though. They look realistic, it's just the blending that you need to improve. nicnic suggestions are a good idea to achieve this.
