Which to choose for rendering Xeon x5690 or Xeon E5 2670 v3

Hi CG Experts,

we are in process of purchasing a rendering system for 3dsmax, vray, maya, mentalray we have 2 choices first is a Dell M1000e blade enclosure with 16 X m610 blades each blade has

2 X Xeon x5690 and 96 GB RAM all for $35K (used system)

the second choice is Supermicro high density enclosure with 8 X servers each server has 2 X Xeon E5 2670 v3 and 96 GB RAM all for $46K (new system)

is the Xeon E5 system will give more performance worth the extra cost or both systems will give the same performance as we comparing 32 x processors to just 16 E5 processors.

X5690: 16x 2x 6x3.46GHz= 664.32GHz | Passmark: 16x 14,444= 231,104 | Benchwell: 16x 820= 13120

 

E5 2670 v3: 8x 2x 12x2.6GHz= 499.2GHz | Passmark: 8x 22,403= 179,224 | Benchwell: 8x 1796= 14368 +9,5%

X5690: TDP 130W x16

 

E5 2670 v3: TDP 120W x8

 

So with the 2670v3 you get roughly 9,5% more render power (in maxwell - other renderers could be slightly different) with probably more than 50% less power consumption for ~30% more money. You get the latest tech (DDR4, AVX2, upgradable to Broadwell-EP). Only 8 instead of 16 systems to administrate and you need less node licenses.

Why 96GB RAM? Because the used systems have it or because you need it? You could save lots of money (~$3000) if 64GB is enough for you. And 96GB is not the best setup for a quad channel system.

 

But i think that both prices are much too high... 16xX5960 should be more like $30K and the 8x2670v3 around $40K i think.

actually i checked the Passmark but i wasn't sure if it's accurate in regards to render or not.

i think the Cinibench is more suitable for our purpose and it gives a low score to E5 2670 v2, v3 not there yet on Cinibench score sites

the x5690 system in pre configured with 96GB ram therefore i tried to match both systems as possible, i'm not familiar with the quad channel system memory setup issue but 64GB is still a good option.

you are right the prices are a little higher than expected because these systems is a blade systems so the add an extra cost for enclosure, power supplies and some network switched.

i get a better price for the E5 system around the figure you mentioned and could be much better if we reduced the RAM.

any further comments are most welcome

Yes, Passmark is not very suitable to compare rendering performance, it's more an overall system performance based on various benchmarks http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm

I just posted it to see how it compares to raw rendering performance like in the maxwell benchmark, which scales very good with additional cores. But you're right, the Passmark score is pretty useless, showing completely different results.

 

From V-Ray forum (V-Ray for max 3.10.03)

 

X5690 (MAX 2015, Win ?, Embree ON)

NUMA: 2min 01s

SMP: 1min 53 s

 

E5-2670v3 (MAX 2014, Win8.1Pro, Embree ON)

1 min 04s

 

So for V-Ray it looks like the 2670v3 is almost twice as fast!

The texture map has been colour corrected. There seems to be square pattern of ridges fainlty across the sheets . The texture doesnt have any darker areas and light to create this effect . its strange unsure whats causing the effect.
