ericchan
Hi all, May I ask for help and tips from Australian artist, arch-viz artist or anyone within architectural field working in Australia. I'm an architectural designer from Hong Kong/Norway and going to relocate to Perth in July. I've tried looking for jobs through agency (hays.com.au) and seek.com.au but so far no luck as they all require 5+ years experience, even as a draftsman. Anyone here could provide me insight and info please? It seems like Perth doesn't have that big market when it comes to Arch-viz or is it simply because the market is already full? Not that I can't do other jobs but I've finally set half my foot into this field I'd like to continue my career as Arch-Viz artist. I've checked Danil's thread (http://forums.cgarchitect.com/26864-2-all-australian-i-need-your-help-4.html), Carl's thread (http://forums.cgarchitect.com/27820-archiviz-jobs-australia.html) and Daniel's thread (http://forums.cgarchitect.com/13733-vis-australia-wa.html) regarding jobs in Aust, Perth. But those are relatively really old threads.. Also I've checked Thomas' thread about listing studios but there are only 2 available. I've tried contact those companies but still no reply. I consider myself a excellent 3DS Max user having experience in viz and animation, also experience in drafting with AutoCAD, Revit and more. Well that's my job as architectural designer in Hong Kong right now. I'm currently leading a team of 4 but not really titled as senior because I don't have xx years experience required to acquire that title?
Justin Hunt
I think those threads still hold true in that the majority of the arch viz jobs are still in Melbourne and Sydney and to a smaller extent Brisbane. Perth is going well with mining industry work. If you are well versed in Revit you should be out of work for too long if you dont mind doing drafting work. On the whole OZ is emerging quickly out of the GFC with a lot of projects that were on hold getting the go ahead.

I've been working mainly with AutoCAD and 3DS Max thus with Revit I may be a little bit behind. Not that I'm not confident but I just need some time to get use to it again. I don't mind doing drafting work but I prefer arch viz because that's the career I want. Am still looking around and sending letters whenever I find any. Got replies from Hays' agent stating that they hardly receive positions accepting overseas candidates and most of them prefer with local experience. Still the ageny recommend me contacting directly to the companies instead. Just like you mentioned in the other threads saying "What Australian experience do you have?". That sure diminish my hope of getting my foot in the door

I do agree with that, but due to personal matter the relocating is to Perth and cannot be changed T,T I prefer working in studios but inhouse works fine too. Do you happen to know any in Perth area? Unfortunately no blogs or online folio available but PDF folio only. Still working on creating a online folio.
CliveG
Well Eric... I live and work from Perth, but I don't do much work IN Perth I'm afraid. There are a couple of good quality studios, a few glorified one man bands as far as dedicated studio employment opportunities go. There are a few of the larger architecturals here that have in house visualisers, I think Nic may know more of this than I do. There is work for sure, but whether there are job's that you can fall into is another matter. I would be astonished if you'd get this through an agency. Drafting work maybe but anything a bit more specialist and you're probably wasting your time with those. Perhaps if you want more info, PM me with an email address or something I can endeavour to be more helpful as I suspect this will just bore everyone else. Good Luck

Good Luck As far as I know jobs through agency tends to be drafting positions only. I would be astonished too if I see agency posting "Arch Visualization" Not to mention those words are as unpopular as war crimes in their career list, be it in Oz, HK or Norway Sure love to have more info, those are never enough even hard to digest

howelaw1
People don't seem to post ads for 3D artists on Seek and the other job sites. But if you contact companies directly with a pdf they may be interested. This is what I know from personal experience anyway.

markparsons
Hey Eric, I'm a Canadian architecture student/3d visualiser. I've never really looked for work in Perth as I'm pretty busy with school, but am about to start looking relatively soon as I've gotten a lot of experience in the last year or so (on Team Australia for the Venice Biennale as well as being nominated for best commissioned image in this year's 3dAwards.) If you're keen I'd be interested in meeting up and chatting - at the very least I can show you around the city. M

John Dollus
Eric, You can also check the artist directory on the asai.org website. We have a couple in Brisbane that are especially aware of what's going on in the region so you may reach out to them and ask about Perth opportunities. Message me directly if you need more info. Thanks for the tips but it looks like there are no info of any artists in Perth area :/ Should I try to contact those on the list and ask them for info? Worth a try I guess
ericchan
Alright so here I am in Perth and settled down with an apartment. But still having trouble landing a job within the field.. Tried Hays but their listing requires xx years experience for senior positions only. Also tried google and e-mail different studios asking about vacancy. Perth's 3D market sure is small compare to Melbourne and Sydney. 70% of the mails I've sent have been ignored with no reply , and it really is depressing and frustrating.. May as well get a temporary job out there before I land a arch viz/3d artist job.. Anyways would be nice if fellow artists out there could help and recommend any possible studios or companies for me to apply
Justin Hunt
Welcome to Oz, hope things pick up for you soon. It can take a while to land that first job, its that age old problem need experience but you cant get experience until you get it. jhv
ericchan
Thanks Justin, let's hope things will pick up soon. I've also noticed most of the archi firms require ArchiCad skills.. I really hope that it won't affect my chances too much because I've never tried it. I may as well DL and try later. Is it greatly different from AutoCAD and/or SketchUp?
