  1. Hey guys. I am trying to make terrain look more realistic by using displacement maps. My thought is, can i use a displacement map to displace a surface but keep all its borders (surface mesh polysrf whatever ) at place? Because the way i am doing it it is losing all its borders and therefore its connection with surrounding surfaces and the model looks "broken". Thanks a lot in advance! Michael
  2. Multiscatter dont support groups (as far as my knownledge goes) but i will look for that in more detail. I will look into clumping as well, i have no idea if that exists in multiscatter! In any case thanks for your help!!
  3. Hello, I have a question if someone can help I have different bush Vray Proxies that i use to multiscatter on a plane. I want to create a small bundle of these proxies, and then make that bundle a new proxie, so essensialy i want to be able to multiscatter the bundle of proxies as a bundle, rather than each proxie seperately so that the distribution of the proxies have always the specific shape that i gave to my bundle. (Different density between specific bushes for example.) I did try to right click make ediable poly the 5 different proxies that i have, and then remaking that as a new proxie, but in that way there is no way for the different proxies to maintain their materials after the new join, and its only one object now. I am looking for a way to maintain the different material properties of the objects and at the same time join th proxies. I understand that i could get the initial polys, make them as i want and them remake that as a proxie with selecting the "save as a single proxie all the items" But that takes time, as different objects are in many files and i am looking for a solution to make these groups fast and be able to change and work with them. I hope my question if clear enough
  4. Hello, I am new to this forum, although i am following the work posted and the tutorials here for quite some time, and i have to say that its a great effort and it has helped me on many occasions. I have a recent problem with one machine at the office were i work. I am an architect and i work at an architectural firm, i am the visual artist of the office and i have quite some years of experiense. I mainly use 4 of our computers which are quite high-end, with distributed rendering. Two of them are actually almost identical in specs. The computrer i am using is an Intel core i7 -3820 CPU @ 3.60 GHz with 40GB of RAM and a graphics card of Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 2 Gb The computer that i call as almost identical is the same only instead of 40 GB of RAM it has 24 GB. The past few days i noticed a drop in the Windows Experiense Index, mainly the number of CPU calculations droped from 7.7 to 6. I started running some tests, tried to update drivers, update BIOS, to a reset on BIOS and i fortmated the computer. After many efforts on the matter the WEI came back to 7.7 from 6. But then i ran some render tests with these two computers. One two IDENTICAL scenes, with identical settings (checked thoroughly) the one computer is rendering the scene on 2 minutes while the other at 5.25. Now this difference is quite noticiable, if you think what will happen if i render i final project scene that would normaly need 10-15 hours the difference then would be too great. Just to make clear, all the files are loeaded localy in each test, there is no distributed rendering involved, and the machines have exactly the same plugins loaded cause i need to have them identical to use them for distributed rendering on other occasions. I send the computer to the manufacturer to check the CPU but they told me it works fine to all the stress tests (such as prime95). I loaded cpu-z and CPU meter and monitored the usage during rendering and it seems to clock normaly @ 3.60 ghz with 100% speed at all times. Can someone please suggest something, cause i am running out of ideas. Thank you very much Michael
  5. Thank you both for your replies. Juraj, this helped, thank you! I know its old school, i dont have much experience on this kind of lighting techniques so it makes sense that i use them first! Why you say vraydomelight is better?
  6. Abhay, i am good, thank you for the quick reply! Here is a pic of camera settings: here is a picture of the VraySun settings: You are right, there are two light sources in the scene. I try to use the dome in order to get better lighting, and it had the effects i needed, but somehow i cant get the shadows to work. Here is the Vraylightmtl settings and fianly this is the rendered preview, where you can see for instance that no objects (trees walls etc) cast shadows anywhere in comparison to before i put the dome. Above that i get some blackish spots on my white walls that were not there before. Hope this helps! I dont have much experience with using domes with vraylight materials.
  7. Hello forum, I am quite new here so i would like to say hi from Greece to you all! I have recently tried for the first time to lit a scene using a dome (from a sphere that i cut the bot part and flip normals) with a Vraylightmtl that has a bitmap of the background on it. I took out the vray sky from the environment settings and left them blank. I played with the vraylightmtl intensity to achieve a well lit background and give light to the scene, my only problem is that there are no direct shadows on objects. The scene is like an extremely cloudy afternoon. Is this natural? How can i get my vraysun to still give shadows on objects. I didn't change any settings during my experimentations. I don't know if this is stupid but i tried to bring the sun inside the dome, i thought it might help, but it didn't seem to affect anything. Anyone any suggestions? The scene that i am trying to lit is an outside scene of a 4-story building with vegetation and surrounding area. The camera is a vray camera. Thanks a lot!
  8. Hello everyone I am new to this forum, i made a post about this also in the "rhino" category, but since its a dual problem i am making one here also, i hope its not a problem. I am trying to export a model of an object (lets say a sofa) from 3D studio max (2012) to rhinoceros 4.0 I export selected in a .3ds format but when i import the file in rhino, the objects of the sofa (arms, cushions, legs etc) are all shifted with different XYZ coordinates and the object has to be readjusted. I have to manually bring everything into place. Any idea why, and how i can elude this? Thanks a lot in advance, Michael
  9. Hello, I am trying to import designed geometry (mesh) from 3D studio max (2012) to rhino. I am exporting selected from max in .3ds and importing that into rhino 4.0 The problem is that the parts of the model, lets say a sofa for instance are all shifted. The arms of the sofa are in a different XYZ coordinates than the originals and i have to adjust them by hand. I tried with different units (inches, meters etc) but that doesn't affect anything. Does anyone know how why this is done, and how i can fix it? Thanks a lot in advance, Michael
