  1. Greetings CG people! I'm at a point in my personal and professional career where I want to make some software changes but am struggling with the best route. My background is in architecture and I am working toward getting licensed in the near future. However I recently started doing some more serious 3D freelance work and want to continue developing this path. Right now I am proficient in AutoCAD and Sketchup. Per the industry standards in Architecture, learning either Revit or ArchiCAD is best for working in a firm. However, if I were to focus on modeling/rendering, I was looking at switching to Rhino or 3DS. I can work pretty fast and detailed in Sketchup, but have come across a number of recent projects where it just can't handle the detail I put into my models. Bottom line is I'm struggling with what direction to take and where to focus my efforts to learning a new software. Yes, if I want to progress with BIM, I'm looking at Revit or ArchiCAD. But if I want to just work on building detailed architectural models for rendering purposes, does anyone use Rhino? Or is it mostly 3DS or Sketchup? Thanks!
  2. I have managed to make this folding armature in grasshopper ( the setup is definitely not clean, but it gets the job done). Now what I wanna do is rig my rhino geometry onto the armature I’ve made and so that the whole geometry folds as the armature. the folding structure has very fixed dimensions and alignments so that it has to be modeled in rhino first. how do I go about it. Folding 2.gh Mashrabia 1 (1).3dm
  3. So Id like to get a Laptop for Rhino, Revit, 3D design and rendering + occasional photo/video editing. Ideally under 2k. Buying in US. Considering Razer Blade 15 4k option with GTX 1070, or the newer 2019 model with RTX2080 but without 4k display. Hows rendering performance on RTX cards? Worth the 4k screen trade off? Alternatively the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 can come with a 32GB ram plus newer 9 Gen i7 but GTX 1650 Max-Q 4GB. Open to any other laptop/workstation laptop ideas. Quadro PC’s do seem a bit pricey.
  4. Hi there, I am looking to render a sculptural form, with tens of thousands of plastic bottles. I'm using V-Ray Next on Rhino. I can get an individual bottle to render correctly, but when rendering them together I end up with a big glittery blob. With no means of identifying what the constituent objects are. So I have two questions: A) If you guys were to approach this, what material and render settings might you use? I'm not concerned with realism per se, more the illustration of intent. And; B) Aside from using proxy objects, any advice on making the scene more economic? Thanks
  5. Hi All, This is a request for one more build for RHINO + VRAY workstation and I would love to hear the feedback. Its envisioned as a mid range tower CPU - AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 2950X or AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 1950X OR would you suggest INTEL? Anything higher than this would sky rocket the price. GPU GTX 1080 TI or Quadro P2000. Or anything particular ? Rest I think would add up accordingly. Since I feel in this forum, most of the people are use to working with VRAY and RHINO, I would be really helpful to hear the feedback. And if there's any portable workstation that you think would fit, give me a heads up.
  6. Hello let me introduce myself My name is Thomas Groppi from Vancouver B.C I teach Rhino/Modo/Solidworks for Industrial Designer at Emily Carr University of Art and Design as well as Architecture for University of Oregon. Here are some beginner training videos for learning Modo / Rhino / Solidworks (soon GH) We use those software for Kinetic Architecture https://www.youtube.com/user/tgroppi If it can be any help go for it Best Thomas
  7. Hello Everybody, I'm new in vray and need some help with infinite plane and glass reflection. I want to render object in white backround and using infinite plane to get shadows on ground. My problem is that glass in that object reflecting infinite plane. Is it possible do not reflect infinte plane on glass and still have shadows on the ground. I'm using vray 1.5 and rhino...
  8. Hi all, I'm at the moment trying to decide if I should use Sketchup or Rhino for visualisation. Both programs are perfectly capable, however I'm just looking for some perspectives on why some people may choose one over the other. Thanks, Jayden
  9. I’m having problems with black geometric lines appearing on random surfaces in renders generated using VRAY in Rhino. These can be seen in the images attached. If anyone has any suggestions to resolve this please respond. Jake
  10. Hi, I'm currently working on building a folio & developing my work flow. I currently go from Revit to 3DS Max, but I'll soon be switching to either Rhino and/or Sketchup. How do other people work? Do most people model in Sketchup/Rhino then export to 3DS? Or is just modelling based on plans in 3DS the way to go? I'd love to hear all the different workflows people use! Thanks for your feedback
  11. Hi guys New user of Vray for Rhino here. I don't know if I'm just not getting something, but I simply cannot get a plane with a simple bitmap (a background) to disappear and not cast a shadow. I need a reflective steel object, but with no shadows or visibility of the bitmap plane. I have 'only in secondary' on and 'cast shadows' off. Seems to have zero effect.
  12. Hi, I'm currently working on my portfolio and developing a workflow. At the moment I work in Revit>3DS Max, however I'll soon be moving over to Sketchup/Rhino. Is the best way to go for modelling off plans to do it in Sketchup/Rhino, or just model the whole thing in 3DS? I'd love to hear feedback & the various other workflows people use!
  13. Ok so at this point it just seems that the higher the Cuda Cores, the better (clock-speed as well). But would a GTX 1070 be enough for fairly complex Rhino renders? I am always tempted to go higher like, say, a 1080 ti because it has like 3500 Cuda Cores. On the other hand, there are some great laptops with a 1070. That way I can use the laptop as a desktop and I will have the option of portability.
  14. Hey guys, I am trying to make a panorama in rhino with vray. Now I am stumbling into something i don't understand - I put my camera on sperical - Override FOV to 360.. Now this should work... But if i render it, it is more like 180 degrees than 360. The weird thing is, that it does work when i turn of the Physical camera settings, now its 360 degrees. But the problem is that if i do that, i lose my camera settings of iso and f-number. This leads to an overly white render. Is there a way to solve this, or to do the light settings somewhere else (I used to work in 3dmax and know i can do that there) let me know thanks
  15. Hi everyone. I've graduated recently from Architecture and I have been using Blender and Cycles since 2 years or so. Now I'm moving to the GameDev workflow, adding Rhinoceros, the Allegorithmic suite and UE4 to the mix. But I'm still struggling with the UV unwrapping process, especially exporting meshes from nurbs, which I'm trying to solve with Blender. I'll be happy to share what I know with you guys. Thanks!
  16. Hi! I am very new to 3D computer modelling and got the trial version of Vray for Rhino but I can't seem to get my head around why my renders are so poor. I've set the output size to 3840x2160 but even so, the renders finish really fast and to very low quality/size. Am I being stupid and missing something really obvious or is this just something that happens with the trial version? Thanks for anybody's help!
  17. Hey Guys not sure what/where I have gone wrong here Any advice as to why my render is coming out the way it is would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rab
  18. Hi! Im new here, so sorry if this have been discussed before. Im looking for a simple way to make my materials look more dirty and realistic. I have several materials with opacity which I would like to "stack" on top of for example a concete wall. Only solution I found is angeled blend and it kind of works, but I would love to add more layers. Any good ideas or maybe this is just a beginner question. Anyway would love to get some input. Rhino 5 and Vray 1.5and something.
  19. Hi, How do I import a Rhino 3d model into Sketchup? I have tried to do so, but unfortunately these black lines appear all over the model (it was built with co-planar surfaces in Rhino). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  20. Hey Everyone, I have a question. Have been off the rendering for a while and I am switching from vray max to vray rhino to improve my workflow. I wonder how I can get the vray infinity plane to not show up in my rendering but I still want it to effect the scene lighting. Like reflecting sunlight and such. Now I see the infinitplane through my windows and I don't want that... I rather add the ground in PS. How is this done? Best regards Sledge
  21. I know this subject repeatedly gets hashed out on the forums, but I have tried all suggestions I have come across thus far- so if anyone has any insight please chime in! I need to produce 7200 x 3600 px with rhino 5/vray 2. It is of an interior / exterior habitat for a rhinoceros, (Rhinos in Rhino!) thus, lots of vray proxy grasses, plants, trees, rocks. (though most of the trees are actually flat planes) I rendered out shots at 2048 x 1024 px, and my general everyday settings with dr spawner over 4 networked computers, each took 45 minutes or so, no problems. So, on to render large, and I'm using brute force and ir map, (light cache is always finicky and crash happy for me with lots of plantings) screenshots of settings are attached- I am pre- calculating IR map, and rendering to vrimg, and no memory frame buffer In the past, these have worked for me for large stuff. Especially key was the tweaking the default displacement settings, as vray's default is too high. I am now hoping I can get the RGB and alpha channels rendered out, and plan on scaling up other channels I need in photoshop for post, as I read in a Max/vray thread that the z-depth pass can be heavy if you have lots of proxies far away. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, especially anyone familiar with rhino/vray... things just behave a bit differently than max/vray. Maybe I should turn off DOF? I know lens effects can add significant time... I have attached some of the draft shots- (btw each view is in a separate file now, and geometry not affecting the view is deleted, materials and scene purged) settings- draft shots-
  22. Hi all, Im hoping someone can help me out here. Im not sure why, but my Rhino/Vray file is crashing over and over after about 4-5 minutes, no matter how much I dumb down the model/settings. Its usually around the same time, about 50-75% through the actual rendering process. Up to that point it is running smoothly. All of a sudden I get the message that Rhinocerous 32-bit has stopped working and if I want to look online for a solution. This is very weird because up to this morning this file has been working fine. I was able to put out 2 renderings yesterday from the same file, with no issues. Ive tried restarting the computer a couple times but no luck. Im somewhat limited on what kind of technical things I do as this is a school lab computer (no administrative capabilities to us students). I've reduced the file from 200mb to 150mb with no change in result. Nothing was changed in the render settings. Can someone shine a little light on a poor student with limited resources? Cheers, -BC
  23. Hi, I want to build a system primarily used for CAD work. I am currently at University and I need a computer that can handle Rhino, Sketchup and Keyshot with ease. There is a chance I will need it to run programs like 3ds Max and Autodesk Alias in the future so It would be good if it was well suited to those as well. My budget is £900. I don't want to overclock. I want the computer to be compact so I want it to be a mini ATX or ITX build. The build as it stands- CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£198.71 @ Amazon UK) Motherboard: ASRock H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£67.99 @ Amazon UK) Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£51.72 @ Amazon UK) Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£74.09 @ Amazon UK) Video Card: PNY Quadro K620 2GB Video Card (£144.54 @ CCL Computers) Case: Fractal Design Arc Mini R2 MicroATX Mini Tower Case (£64.99 @ Novatech) Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£49.79 @ Aria PC) Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer (£10.55 @ CCL Computers) Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WN881ND 802.11b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter (£9.79 @ CCL Computers) Monitor: Dell U2414H 60Hz 23.8" Monitor (£179.70 @ CCL Computers) Total: £851.87 (operating system extra £50) I am looking for particular advice regarding the graphics card. Should I get the K620 or the GTX 760 or something completely else? I would also appreciate advice on whether the psu is a good choice and would much appreciate any other suggestions and opinions or experience regarding the other parts as I am still a little unsure on some of them. Many Thanks.

    Light leak vray

Hi all! I've been browsing around for the last few days, trying to find an answer to this, with no luck. I'm a noob, this will be my first post on cgarchitect. When I render my scene with material override things are looking good, but when adding my own Standard Material, light leaks are appearing. So I guess something is wrong with the material settings? (I've been trying to bump up the Irradiance map min. rate. with no success.) Also, can anyone explain what is the difference between a "Vray material" and a "Standard material"? Why is there no place for a bump map when making a "Vray material" I am using Vray with Rhino. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
  25. Hi! I'm having some trouble with my materials when rendering. I'm trying to do a ambient occlusion pass on a dxf-import from revit. The problem is that I can only get the model to switch materials if I apply material to a whole layer. If I switch an object's layer to get the right objects on the right layers for the materials, it doesn't work. Anyone know a solution? Should I just try a different import?
